The second city of California, behind Los Angeles, San Diego is a whole different prospect for visitors and indeed here is where many from LA come on holiday. There is the beaches and the sailing, and the rich cultural heritage which comes with a location on the border with Tijuana in Mexico. There is also the curious, yet wholly commendable balance between high technology, big business, a flourishing cultural identity, and natural conservation. These are all good reasons for spending time in the city and whether for a business trip, a weekend sun, sea and sand party, an historic tour, or a family vacation, there is a San Diego hotel conveniently placed and ready primed for the purpose.

The Pacific Fleet of the US Navy is based in San Diego and they follow a tradition of sailing and seafaring here which dates back to the times of Spanish rule. Some of the great historic sights of the old town date from this period too, when San Diego became the first of California's Spanish missions in 1769. The mission has since been relocated from its original point to Mission Valley, some five miles away, and remains today the main attraction on the El Camino Royale Mission Trail. Much of the old town remains, as an historic national park, and contained therein are many of the historic and cultural determinants of the city as it is today.

From the Old Town to the coast takes in the peninsula of Point-Loma Ocean Beach, and northwards, Mission Beach and Pacific Beach, the two main beach communities and home to most of the beach bars, nightlife and also Sea World. Further north is La Jolla, a district which has its own city feel, up-scale beaches and the University of California San Diego. The downtown area of the city contains many further nightlife and other attractions centred around the main business district and close by is Balboa Park Hillcrest. This is a huge urban city park which contains the main attraction for many visitors, San Diego Zoo, as well as many further museums and family activities. A Go San Diego Card will permit admission into over 50 city attractions.

San Diego Zoo is widely regarded as one of the best zoos in the world and it would have to be good to draw visitors to the city away from the seemingly endless beach and sea activities. Good surfing is available from many of the beaches and there are numerous surf schools on hand with some tuition. Further to that, San Diego Bay is a prime location for windsurfing, jet skiing and sailing and those looking for marina berths will find them in downtown, Point Loma, Coronado and Chula Vista. A long history in seafaring makes for some great scuba wreck dives too and for those who prefer more sedate seagoing pleasures there are leisure boat trips, and whale-watching during the February migration season.

Away from the sea, the outdoor activities continue with hiking, climbing, kayaking, mountain biking, hang gliding and golf, all within easy reach of the city centre. With so much to see and do in San Diego the best hotel for any stay may be one which is best placed for certain activities. Beach resort hotels will have the location, and all the on-site facilities for family holidays and couple getaways, while city hotels will provide easy access to the commercial and cultural heart of San Diego. Many of the historic hotels impart some of the great culture and ambience of the place, while the modern business hotels will represent all the best aspects of the 21st century city.
