The Best San Diego Sushi

Jul 8 , 2011

San Diego is one of the best spots in the country for delicious, top quality sushi, thanks to the Pacific Ocean's plethora of seafood options and the influence of Japanese culture. Locals take their sushi seriously, and sushi restaurants of varying prices and specialties have grown to accommodate demand for the popular food style.

Ono Sushi

Ono Sushi, located in the cool, relaxed Hillcrest neighborhood, is a go-to San Diego sushi restaurant for locals who want the freshest seafood available. Ono draws crowds for its specialty sushi, including grilled yellowtail collar and tako poki, as well as signature rolls like the San Diego roll, with yellowtail, crab, wasabi tobiko, and avocado.

Try an Ono Roll, with smoked salmon, cream cheese, and unagi, along with a PD Roll, which has spicy crab, sprouts, and seared albacore, for a complex and refined sushi experience. Ono is home to one of the best happy hour deals in the San Diego sushi world, with half priced regular rolls on Monday, half off select specialty rolls on Tuesday, and $1 sake on Wednesday.

It’s hard to say no to the best San Diego sushi, especially when it’s such a great deal.

RA Sushi

RA Sushi is one of the trendiest San Diego sushi restaurants, and its downtown location is a top destination for business travelers and families alike. Its interior is hip and its flavors are intense, and you’ll find a variety of delicious specialty rolls from which to choose.

Two particularly popular and tasty rolls are the Ra’ckin’ Roll, which has kani kama crab, cream cheese, guacamole and shrimp, and the Ra’llipop, which features a mix of spicy tuna, yellowtail, and salmon wrapped in lobok with lettuce, cucumber, and asparagus. Prices are very reasonable at Ra Sushi, making it a great place for a quick bite after a day of meetings or for feeding a hungry family with adventurous younger eaters.

Sushi Ota

Sushi Ota’s strip mall location isn’t much to look at, but the lines of anxious sushi enthusiasts who wait for the restaurant to open every night are a good indication that you’ll find some of the best San Diego sushi here. Prices can be steep, but rest assured that you’re paying for the freshest, finest seafood available from Japan, Hawaii, and Californian shores.

Sushi Ota is renowned for its sashimi, and it is a good choice if you’d like to expand your sushi horizons and try something outside your comfort zone, because you’ll know that what you’re eating is sushi in its freshest form.

Harney Sushi

In San Diego, sushi is a popular meal for partiers before they head out to the city’s nightclubs and bars. Harney Sushi has decided to go ahead and make itself the night’s destination, offering plenty of tasty sushi, along with nightly DJ performances.

Harney Sushi’s specialty and hand rolls are delicious, especially the impressively spicy Pirate Roll and soft shell crab hand roll. Come in for the late night festivities and a special menu of rolls and appetizers to soak up whatever your night may have involved.

Taka

Taka is an authentic Japanese San Diego sushi restaurant in the Gaslamp District. Its sashimi is fresh and reliably delicious, and the prices are reasonable. Ask the chef what’s fresh, and order accordingly. Try the giant clam if you can, or for a change of pace, order the New York strip, which is a prime cut of beef with sesame miso and oroshi yuzo ponzo.

Like so many other San Diego sushi restaurants, Taka is high quality, affordable, and reliable. If you want to check out the other food traditions the area has to offer, make a reservation at any of the best San Diego restaurants.
